How could we not use the Tokyo 2020 (… 2021) Olympics to explore ordinal numbers!?

Ordinal numbers are the numbers that tell you position relative to others.  They are important to understand for many reasons but in early development they represent the order in which you do things in time or space.  When giving an instruction, you might say “We are going out.  First brush your teeth, second get your shoes on and third get into the car.”  Or we might use the idea of first, next and last.

So there are lots of opportunities whilst watching the Olympics to talk about and use ordinal numbers.

What about…

  • Creating your own ordinal number line and line up your competitors

  • Make your own podium and award 1st, 2nd and 3rd place

  • Talk about 4th place and not getting a medal

  • Pause the TV and look at the countries on the table; see how they compare after the next round

  • Select a country to cheer for and check what position they finish in

Remember to share your ideas and inspire others.
