Level 2 - Subject Content

Level 2 follows on seamlessly from Level 1 of Maths For Life and builds on the scope and complexity of the topic in an incremental and logical way. All content at this level sits within the UK maths national curriculum of the Key Stage 1 and the beginning of Key Stage 2.

4. Recognise odd and even numbers up to 100

5. Understand and recognise ordinal numbers up to hundredth

6. Add two numbers which total up to 100

7. Subtract one- and two-digit numbers from numbers up to 100

8. Group numbers by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10

9. Count on in 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 10s

10. Understand multiplication as repeated addition

11. Multiply numbers by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10

12. Share numbers by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10

13. Count back in 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 10s

14. Understand division as repeated subtraction

15. Divide numbers up to 100 by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10

16. Recognise and interpret the symbols +, -, x, ÷ and = appropriately

TOPIC 2 - USING COMMON MEASURES, SHAPE AND SPACE

17. Recognise, order and understand the value of all coins and notes in the context of the real world

18. Calculate money with pence up to one pound (p)

19. Calculate money in whole pounds up to £100 (£)

20. Know that there are 60 seconds in 1 minute

21. Know that there are 60 minutes in 1 hour

22. Read 12 hour digital and analogue clock in digital time

23. Read and record common date formats

24. Navigate an annual calendar in days, weeks and months forward and back

25. Read and use simple scales to the nearest labelled division

26. Use metric measures of length including millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres

27. Use measures of weight including grams and kilograms

28. Use measures of capacity including millilitres and litres

29. Use measures of positive temperatures in degrees

30. Recognise and name 2-D and 3-D shapes including pentagon, hexagon, cylinder, cuboid, pyramid and sphere

31. Describe the properties of common 2-D and 3-D shapes in the context of real life application

32. Use appropriate positional vocabulary to describe position and direction

TOPIC 3 - HANDLING INFORMATION AND DATA

33. Extract information from lists, tables, diagrams and bar charts

34. Make numerical comparisons from bar charts

35. Sort and classify objects using two criteria

36. Take information from one format and represent the information in another format

All Record of Progress, Content and Baseline Assessments use the same nomenclature reference that directly relates to the subject content. For example:

Topic 1 - 2. Read, write, order and compare numbers up to 100 will be 2L1.2 - Level 2, Topic 1, Subject 2

Topic 2 - 29. Use measures of positive temperatures in degrees will be 2L2.29 - Level 2, Topic 2, Subject 29

LEVEL 2 STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE ABLE TO:

  • use given mathematical information including numbers, symbols, simple diagrams and charts;

  • recognise, understand and use simple mathematical terms appropriate to Level 2;

  • use the methods given above to produce, check and present results that make sense; and

  • present appropriate explanations using numbers, measures, simple diagrams, simple charts and symbols appropriate to Level 2.

The context for simple problems at Level 2 should be familiar to all students and easily described.

Small steps, bright future.
