Foundations - Subject Content

The Foundations of Maths For Life is the scheme of work that takes a child’s development in maths from birth to Level 1 content. It maps out the mathematical milestones and steps needed to achieve them at the micro level needed for children with additional learning needs.

TOPIC 0 - DEVELOPING PRENUMBER SKILLS AND CONCEPTS

1. Make simple comparison

2. Identify the same and different

3. Matching

4. Simple classification

TOPIC 1 - USING NUMBERS AND THE NUMBER SYSTEM - WHOLE NUMBERS

5. Rote count the numbers from 1 to 10

6. Conservation of number

7. One-to-one correspondence when counting

8. Stable order when counting 1 to 10

9. Cardinality - the last number counted is the total amount

10. Understand 'zero'

11. Subitising - visual spotting, understanding the wholeness of a number

12. Recognise numerals from 0 to 10

13. Know the value of numerals from 0 to 10

14. Write numbers 0 to 10

15. Read numbers 0 to 10

16. Order and compare numbers up to 10

17. Use whole numbers to count reliably up to 10 items including zero

18. Count on from a number other than 1

19. Count backwards from 10 to zero

20. Compare two given numbers of objects in groups of up to ten

21. Use ordinal numbers from first to tenth, when describing position in a sequence of numbers

22. Simple whole number addition up to a value of 10

23. Simple whole number subtraction from numbers up to 10

24. Recognise and interpret the symbols +, - and = appropriately

TOPIC 2 - USING COMMON MEASURES, SHAPE AND SPACE

25. Recognise coins and notes and write them in numbers with the correct symbols (£ & p), where these involve numbers up to 10

26. Understand the relative duration of a second, a minute and an hour

27. Understand the parts of the day - morning, afternoon, evening, night

28. Understand what a day is and recognise the names of days

29. Understand the concept of today, yesterday and tomorrow

30. Understand the relative duration of a day, a week, a month and a year

31. Describe and compare marked differences in size between two items using simple comparative vocabulary such as large, big, small

32. Describe and compare marked differences in lengths and heights of two items using simple comparative vocabulary such as long, short, tall

33. Describe and compare marked differences in weights of two items using simple comparative vocabulary such as heavy, light

34. Describe and compare marked differences in capacity and quantity of two items using simple comparative vocabulary such as full, empty, holds more, holds less, has more, has less

35. Recognise basic 2-D shapes

36. Recognise basic 3-D shapes

37. Identify and select a variety of shapes to make simple pictures, patterns and models

38. Use familiar and simple vocabulary to describe shape and size, such as straight, curved, flat, larger, smaller

39. Understand and apply simple positional vocabulary, including in / out, under / over, front / back, in front of / behind

40. Understand and apply direction of movement, including up / down

TOPIC 3 - HANDLING INFORMATION AND DATA

41. Recognise and describe list of up to five items

42. Sort and classify objects using a single criterion

43. Use simple representations or diagrams for counting numbers up to 10

All Record of Progress, Content and Baseline Assessments use the same nomenclature reference that directly relates to the subject content. For example:

Topic 0 - 2. Identify the same and different will be F0.2 - Foundation Level, Topic 0, Subject 2

Topic 1 - 21. Use ordinal numbers from first to tenth, when describing position in a sequence of numbers will be F1.21 - Foundation Level, Topic 1, Subject 21

Small steps, bright future.
